Who Is Sidney Powell? Trump Campaign Dropped Lawyer After Election Conspiracy Theories
KEY POINTS
- Powell previously accused Gov. Kemp of rigging the presidential election
- The North Carolina lawyer represented Michael Flynn in 2019
- Powell is a known QAnon supporter
President Donald Trump's legal team on Sunday dropped attorney Sidney Powell after she made baseless allegations of widespread voter fraud and promoted far-fetched conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.
Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, and campaign attorney Jenna Ellis announced Powell’s removal on through a terse statement. It is unclear what led to the decision.
“Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own. She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity,” the statement read.
On Saturday, Powell was interviewed on the conservative cable TV channel Newsmax when she made claims about the U.S. election. During the phone interview, the lawyer accused Republican Gov. Brian Kemp of being bribed by a Venezuelan election systems company.
Powell also claimed that Kemp had rigged the election machines that led to Sen. Kelly Loeffler’s win against Rep. Doug Collins. Her attack on the Republican governor was not well-received by GOP members. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie had some choice words for her attack, Politico reported.
“Sidney Powell accusing Governor Brian Kemp of a crime on television yet being unwilling to go on TV and defend and lay out the evidence that she supposedly has, this is outrageous conduct,” Christie said.
Trump announced Powell as part of his legal team on Nov. 15. She gained Trump's attention after she claimed that Robert Mueller’s probe into the president’s relationship with the Russian government was part of an effort to undermine him.
Powell — originally from Durham, North Carolina — became prominent in the Trump administration after former national security adviser Michael Flynn hired her as his lawyer in 2019.
Powell withdrew Flynn's guilty plea to lying to the FBI about his connections with the Russian government. She also accused federal prosecutors of prosecutorial misconduct, which led to Attorney General William Barr dropping the charges, Forbes reported.
Powell is known as a supporter of QAnon, frequently sharing slogans from major QAnon accounts on her Twitter page. QAnon refers to conspiracy theories that claim a cabal of Satan-worshipping child-abusers who operate a global child sex-trafficking ring run the world.
QAnon followers believe that cabal members molest, kill and “extract a life-extending chemical” from young children.
