Sophia Di Martino has been in talks to star alongside Tom Hiddleston in the Disney+ series “Loki.” This could potentially mean a lot for the series, as her character will reportedly play a "crucial" part in the show.

Di Martino was born on November 15, 1983 in Nottingham, England. Her first role was in the British television series "Holby City," back in 2004, but she's perhaps most well known for her character of Amy Flowers in the Channel 4/Netflix series "Flowers." Her character, Amy, is a child-like artist who, like her other family members, struggles with mental health and other issues. The dark comedy has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and Di Martino's performance earned a lot of praise.

Di Martino has apparently been considered by Marvel Studios for some time now, thanks in part to her role in Paul Feig’s Freeform pilot “Girls Code” (Freeform and Marvel Studios are both owned by Disney). However, no official word on her casting has been made by Marvel Studios yet.

According to Variety, the role in “Loki” was between Di Martino and many high-profile actors with Di Martino beating them out and taking the role. She has had relatively small roles on television, but recently broke out in “Flowers,” which led to her being cast in Danny Boyle’s The Beatles tribute movie “Yesterday” and “Girls Code.”

Screen Rant reports that “Loki” producer Stephen Broussard states the show will have "a man on the run quality to it." With “Rick and Morty” writer Michael Waldron serving as showrunner for the limited series, “Loki” is expected to play with time and reality-bending mechanics similar to the popular cartoon comedy. It will even tie directly into the similarly space-time-bending sequel to “Doctor Strange.”

Whether Di Martino will play a role in that is unknown.

Deadline even reports that the character of Loki may even be bent and played with a bit, as Di Martino’s character could actually be a female version of Loki. Screen Rant also noted that, if this is true, it wouldn’t be the first time Loki has been a female. The comics have played with gender quite a bit, and with “Thor: Love and Thunder” likely giving us a female Thor, played by Natalie Portman, it isn’t too far out there.

In any case, it seems the role is going to be a big one and could be a time-travel adventure akin to “Doctor Who.” If that is the case, Di Martino’s role could be something more of a companion to Loki, rather than an alternate version of him.

The time and reality-bending show will reportedly begin production in early 2020.
