Who Wins ‘Game Of Thrones?’ Which Characters Will Die In Season 8

The final season of “Game of Thrones” is almost upon us, and fans only want to know two things going into it—who will win and take the Iron Throne, and who will die.

Of course, HBO is going to keep that information completely under wraps (and unlike previous seasons has also managed to do so thus far), so all anyone can do is take a guess based on information we already know, as well as small hints that may or may not have been dropped in interviews thus far. When it comes to which characters are dying and which are surviving, there’s some who seem more likely than others to make it out alive.

Here’s the fate we think will befall every character still on the canvas.

Zero Chance of Survival:

The Mountain and Beric Dondarrion

When it comes to placing bets on which characters are, without a doubt, not making it through Season 8, fans should go for The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) and Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer). The Season 8 trailer showed a glimpse of what will (hopefully) be Cleganebowl, pitting the Mountain against his brother—and it would be hard to imagine a Cleganebowl where The Mountain was victorious. As for Beric, with Thoros (Paul Kaye) dying in Season 7, there is no one to bring him back again if he falls. Since he is on the front lines in the battle against the dead, it’s safe to say his death will happen there, and this time, he will stay dead.

Extremely Low Chance Of Survival:

Cersei Lannister, Jaime Lannister, Euron Greyjoy and Melisandre

These characters are exceptionally likely to say their goodbyes in the final season, but since the show does like to throw curveballs, there could be a minute chance they end up pulling through. Cersei’s (Lena Headey) death was predicted in the books, but conveniently left out of the show, but with literally no true allies left that she hasn’t basically bought, her chances of making it through to the end seem extremely unlikely. Though he now fights for the other side, her twin brother Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) seems unlikely to survive his redemption arc. Whether he dies alongside the sister he has loved all these years or is killed in battle, he seems unlikely to make it out.

Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk) seems to be unlikely to survive solely because Theon (Alfie Allen) is on a redemption arc of his own—which will likely end with his trying to save Yara (Gemma Whalen). As a result, it seems likely he will kill his uncle.

Melisandre’s (Carice van Houten) end is also pretty much guaranteed. She alluded to it in Season 7, so fans know it is coming—and it seems unlikely the show wouldn’t show it happen.

Very Low Chance Of Survival:

Qyburn and Lord Varys

If Cersei dies, her hand Qyburn (Anton Lesser) will go with her. As for Varys (Conleth Hill), Melisandre predicted his death as well, so it’s unlikely it would have been alluded to without it actually happening.

Low Chance Of Survival:

Jorah Mormont

Jorah (Iain Glen) has always lived for Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and will do anything for her. He may have successfully beaten Greyscale so he could return to her service, but his number of times that he can come back seem to be running out.

Low To Medium Chance of Survival:

Grey Worm and The Hound

The Hound (Rory McCann) will win Cleganebowl—but much like his brother’s battle with Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) in Season 4, the battle will probably end with each one of them dying before it is truly over. As for Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson), there wasn’t a shot of him and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) sharing a super passionate kiss that looked like a goodbye one in the trailer for nothing. Sadly, genuine love isn’t ever really rewarded on “Game of Thrones,” so these two are likely to be ripped apart by death, and with Grey Worm on the front lines, he seems like the one more likely to perish.

Medium Chance Of Survival:

The Night King, Theon Greyjoy and Daenerys Targaryen

Though Theon will likely complete his redemption arc by saving his sister from Euron, it doesn’t mean he will necessarily do so with complete success. Euron’s death may seem more or less guaranteed, but even if he can kill his uncle and save Yara, that feels like the true end to his story—which would make it poignant if the moment ended with his death.

The Night King (Vladimir Furdik) hopefully won’t make it all the way to the end of the show since he’s one of the show’s evil forces. However, if his real reason for forming his army of the dead comes out, and he actually agrees to go back beyond the Wall at some point, he could survive—but without destroying everyone and everything in Westeros. He could still die though too, so his fate is truly up in the air.

Sadly Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is someone who it’s hard to predict for her ending—which lands her firmly in the middle. There are equal chances she dies (if the Season 8 poster contains a subtle hint), but there is, of course, an equal chance she survives and goes on the become the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Overall, it seems unlikely she and Jon (Kit Harington) will both survive, and if one of them has to die, the truth about his lineage (and the fact that he has died before) make Jon seem more likely to make it through.

Medium To High Chance of Survival:

Yara Greyjoy, Tormund Giantsbane, Jon Snow, Bronn and Brienne of Tarth

Yara may be the last Greyjoy standing in the end if Theon’s arc goes the way it feels it will, so she seems more likely to survive than the other remaining members of her family. Meanwhile, Tormund (Kristofer Hivju), Bronn (Jerome Flynn) and Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) are all known for their tough exteriors, brawn and skill in battle. Though their deaths could be handed to viewers anyway for an emotional punch (especially if Tormund and Brienne actually somehow wind up together right before), there is hope they will make it to the end of the show.

As for Jon, he still seems more likely than Daenerys to survive because of his past. It wouldn’t seem like justice for him to have come back in Season 6 just so he could eventually meet her and learn the truth about his parentage—only to die again. In addition, he is literally the ice (Stark) and fire (Targaryen)--it feels like that makes him untouchable.

High Chance Of Survival:

Podrick Payne, Bran Stark, Arya Stark, Tyrion Lannister

It seems highly likely that fans will still see Podrick (Daniel Portman) through to the end of “Game of Thrones” because he’s been working on his battle skills with Brienne. Under her tutelage, he’s likely grown as a fighter, and he’s also always known for surprises—meaning he’s likely going to surprise us with a survival.

In terms of logic, wisdom and knowledge, no two characters have more of it than Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright). Neither one will likely wind up on the front lines of battle, but in general, they both have the ability to survive by using their minds. Tyrion has always been one of the wisest people on the show, and will likely be able to use his smarts to his advantage. Bran’s powers as the three-eyed-raven may not allow him to see the future, but his ability to see everything in the world that is happening, as well everything that already has, somehow makes it seem possible that he’ll come out unscathed.

Arya (Maisie Williams) also seems highly likely to make it out alive because she is genuinely someone who is deadly these days. She did seem to be running scared in the trailer from something, but fans all know she also could be doing that to trap someone in a situation where she successfully can kill them as well since she did that to finally defeat the Waif (Faye Marsay) when she was still in Braavos.

Very High Chance Of Survival:

Sansa Stark, Gendry and Missandei

Missandei should survive because she’s never on the front lines, where Grey Worm will be. Since one of them seems likely to die, she seems more likely to survive. She also somehow still feels important to the overall story, not just as Daenerys’ most-trusted advisor, but because of her impressive ability to speak and translate 19 different languages.

Gendry (Joe Dempsie) should also survive because that’s literally what he’s been doing his entire time on the show (even when he was seemingly just missing for three years). Fans didn’t just get him back in Season 7 for him to just die in battle now.

As for Sansa (Sophie Turner), these days, no one seems more primed to make it to the end than she does. She has come a long way from the girl who was only concerned with marrying a prince, and even with her proving herself as a skilled negotiator and tough leader, she’s not done.

Almost Guaranteed Survival:

Ser Davos Seaworth, Gilly and Samwell Tarly

If anyone is definitely getting out of the wars unscathed it is Gilly (Hannah Murray) and Sam (John Bradley). It would just seem strange for them to not make it out alive after everything else they’ve faced and been through. They generally stay away from the front lines of battle, though Sam can pull out a stealth move when needed, but they just don’t seem to be the ones who would be sacrificed in the end.

As for Davos, seeing him die in the end just also seems unlikely. Killing him off wouldn’t really contribute anything to the overall story.
