Chef Nigella Lawson has caused a firestorm on Twitter simply for the way she butters her toast.

The social media debate started after Lawson demonstrated her perfect method for buttering toast on her BBC cooking show, “Nigella’s Eat, Cook, Repeat.”

The method Lawson added one layer of butter on hot toast as soon as it comes out of the toaster. But then Lawson added a second layer of butter on top of the first that seemed to drive some Twitter fans into a stir.

The toast and butter recipe was then finished off with a sprinkle of salt.

Lawson explained on the show that the first layer of butter gives the toast a “fabulous crumpet bite,” while the second layer of butter she said was added because she needed “a little more butter, and it will stay in some golden patches on the surface.”

Twitter was divided on the toast buttering method.

One Twitter user said, “I always get looks for too much butter on my toast. Your 'double butter' toast method will be my excuse now. 'It’s ok because Nigella does it.'”

Another said, “I endorse the divine Ms @Nigella_Lawson use of better. Entirely.”

Still another fan said, “That @Nigella_Lawson knows what’s what when it comes to toast #doublebutter.”

But not everyone was so supportive of the double butter move. One Twitter user said, “I’m still having a sit down to recover from how much butter Nigella put on a slice of toast.”

Another Twitter user said, “Nigella shows the nation how to butter toast…5 minutes I will never get back #toast #nigella.”

Lawson, who has been featured on TV since 1991, has been praised by her fans as being a domestic goddess in the kitchen with one fan summing up her double butter toast idea as being “genius.”
