KEY POINTS

  • McGregor agrees to boxing match with De La Hoya
  • McGregor vs. De La Hoya may not reel in big money
  • De La Hoya may not be in the right condition to face McGregor

UFC star Conor McGregor wants to try out boxing once more but most question his intention. Some feel that he is in it for the money, seeing how he earned millions from that boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2017. The Irishman has just accepted a challenge from another retired boxer, Oscar De La Hoya.

The 47-year-old retired boxer was ranting recently via Share State of Combat podcast how he would need only two rounds to finish off the UFC champion. He backed that up by saying that he was the type of boxer who immediately goes for the kill. De La Hoya admits that he admires McGregor in the Octagon but boxing was an entirely different matter.

When McGregor got word of it, he wasted no time accepting the challenge. He responded via Twitter. As of this writing, it remains unclear if the clash will prosper. But there are several things to point out should it get done.

First is that De La Hoya is no Mayweather. Should the fight materialize, the revenue proceeds from holding the fight are unlikely to come near to what McGregor made against Mayweather. According to Forbes, the former UFC champion made allegedly made close to $100 million. He was guaranteed $30 million for the boxing match.

Another point worth considering is that De La Hoya has not boxed since 2008. His last ring appearance was on Dec. 6, 2008 where he lost to Manny Pacquiao in the eighth round. Since then, he has been busy managing boxers, particularly Canelo "Saul" Alvarez.

Given those two facts, McGregor may be playing and showing De La Hoya that he is willing to return to the boxing ring. One thing that De La Hoya may need to be wary of is McGregor's ability to last in the ring.

McGregor lasted for 10 rounds against Mayweather but De La Hoya believed it was staged. He alleges that Mayweather carried the fight to last that long for the benefit of pay-per-view fans. If a McGregor vs. De La Hoya fight does get done, the Golden Boy Promotions CEO gets the chance to prove that his theory is correct.
