Why Did Angie Martinez Leave Hot 97? Radio Host Apparently Wants To Pursue Other Opportunities
Angie Martinez took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce she would no longer be a part of Hot 97. Many listeners in the tristate area grew up listening to Martinez and know her as “The Voice of New York.”
Little is known about why the radio host chose to leave. It seems, even for one of the most beloved radio hosts, all good things must come to an end.
Her Instagram message, which was a picture of sunglasses and a quote, revealed the decision was tough but what she needed to do in order to grow. The former rapper, 43, helped make her show rank No. 1 and attracted more young listeners than any other radio program in the country! Though the picture she posted said, “Life has to move forward. Everything has its time and everything ends,” but Martinez was kind enough to offer her fans a little bit more of an explanation.
After it was up for a mere hour, nearly 5,000 people of her 300,000 followers liked the image. The radio personality had been with the station for more than a decade. MTV News reported she began at the company as an intern, when she was a teenager, and eventually moved up to become and on-air personality. She hosted a weekday show on a 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. slot.
Earlier in the year, the DJ talked about her career while on an episode of “RapFix Live.”
“I love what I do, and I think for me, that’s probably what’s worked for me,” she said. “I actually try to figure out new ways to do what I do and be inspired. I really love the music; I really love the artists. I love what I do.”
Martinez might have made the decision to resign so she could pursue a music career. She has released two albums, “Up Close and Personal” in 2011 and then “Animal House” the following year.
“It’s sad, but it’s also exciting,” she said on her final show Wednesday afternoon, according to MTV News. “There’s been things that I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. I have opportunities that I want to pursue.”
