Why Firing Frank Vogel Would Be Big Mistake For Los Angeles Lakers
KEY POINTS
- The Los Angeles Lakers are still expected to fire Frank Vogel at the end of this season
- Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder is the leading name to replace him
- Firing Vogel only makes sense if the Lakers acknowledge their missteps
The Los Angeles Lakers have been knocked out of contention for a play-in spot after losing to the Phoenix Suns, and now it seems that they will also be losing their head coach this offseason.
Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report recently disclosed according to their sources that despite the outcome against the Suns, Vogel’s head was still on the chopping block and the impending vacancy has linked multiple names to taking over.
The question now for the Lakers is which coach would take responsibility to rehabilitate the shambling mess in Los Angeles.
One name that has been heavily rumored is Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder, according to respected NBA insider Marc Stein.
Snyder being linked to the Lakers is no surprise as his team has been struggling to find playoff success despite having a great tandem of Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell leading the way.
Since taking the reins in Salt Lake City back in 2014, Snyder and the Jazz have never made it past the Western Conference Semifinals in three tries.
In 2017, they ran into the buzzsaw that is the Golden State Warriors that acquired Kevin Durant in the offseason and were promptly swept.
The same thing happened the following season when they were ousted in five games by the Houston Rockets despite a Defensive Player of the Year award from Gobert.
Then last season, the Los Angeles Clippers defeated them in six games and fans started wondering whether this team was ever going to contend for an NBA title.
Snyder is no stranger to the Lakers after serving as an assistant coach under Mike Brown during the 2011-12 season.
Though his coaching acumen may get something out of the Lakers next season, Snyder still does not have the personnel to form a competitive team around an aging LeBron James and an oft-injured Anthony Davis.
Firing Vogel is an extremely short-sighted move from the Lakers since he was the man to help orchestrate their 2020 Orlando Bubble title run.
The only major difference between then and now is the roster construction.
Regardless if they make a coaching change, the Lakers will continue to tread water if they continue to stick to this roster that they have to end this season.
The Lakers need to be real with themselves and admit that they continued to make missteps in the past two seasons that sent them from the top of the NBA mountain to completely falling off the mountain.
