Why Maisie Williams Doesn’t Miss ‘Game Of Thrones’ After Portraying Arya Stark
It has been almost three years since the final episode of “Game of Thrones” aired, and actress Maisie Williams admitted she does not miss playing Arya Stark on the HBO series.
Williams came to fame playing the tomboy character who was on a mission to avenge her family. She recently starred in "The New Mutants," a superhero horror film.
In an interview with British GQ, Williams was asked what she missed about "Game of Thrones."
“Can I say none of it?” Williams responded.
“I don’t think it’s healthy [to miss it], because I loved it,” she said. “I look at it so fondly, and I look at it with such pride. But why would I want to make myself feel sad about the greatest thing that ever happened to me? I don’t want to associate that with feelings of pain.”
However, Williams confessed that portraying Arya took a toll on her body image and her fondness for the character began to fade. “I think that when I started becoming a woman, I resented Arya because I couldn’t express who I was becoming,” the 24-year-old English actress said.
“And then I also resented my body, because it wasn’t aligned with the piece of me that the world celebrated.”
During an interview with Vogue in 2019, Williams also spoke out about how portraying Arya caused her to struggle with body issues.
“Around season 2 or 3, my body started to mature and I started to become a woman,” Williams said.
“But Arya was still very much trying to be disguised as a boy. I had really short hair, and they’d constantly cover me in dirt and shade my nose so it looked really broad, and I looked really manly.
“They’d also put this strap across my chest to flatten any growth that had started. I don’t know, that just felt horrible for six months of the year, and I felt kind of ashamed for a while.”
Once the show wrapped, Williams admitted she was relieved to enter a new style phase where she was able “to look more feminine” and embrace her body.
Williams said she would be willing to reprise her “Game of Thrones” role if it was in the right context.
