Phoebe Waller-Bridge has exited Amazon's adaptation of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's hit action comedy film "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," reports confirmed.
The British actress, best known for her indie TV hit "Fleabag," left the project because she had a different creative vision for the series than fellow star and executive producer Donald Glover, unnamed sources told The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite her decision, insiders told the outlet that Waller-Bridge and Glover, who previously worked together in 2018's "Solo: A Star Wars Story," remain friends and that the split was "amicable."
Waller-Bridge's role will now be recast, but Glover, who brought the idea of a "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" remake to the actress, will continue to serve as co-creator, executive producer and lead actor of the project. The series remains on track for a 2022 debut.
Francesca Sloane, a collaborator with Glover on FX’s "Atlanta," remains co-creator, showrunner and executive producer on the series via her overall deal with Amazon. New Regency’s Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer will also executive produce.
Waller-Bridge's exit from the project came seven months after their collaboration was announced. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios and New Regency, confirmed the revival and the two Emmy award winners' casting, describing Waller-Bridge and Glover as the "dream team" at the time.
"Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team," Salke said in a statement to Entertainment Tonight in February.
She continued, "'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own. We’re thrilled to be working with them, and with such great partners at New Regency."
Waller-Bridge is currently busy with "Indiana Jones 5," in which she stars, and the upcoming final season of AMC/BBC America's "Killing Eve," which she is executive producing. She also contributed to the script of the upcoming James Bond movie "No Time to Die."
Glover also has several projects lined up. He is in postproduction on FX's "Atlanta" Season 3 and is in production on Season 4. He has already written all the scripts for the fourth season. The third season is expected to return in the first half of 2022, with Season 4 expected to premiere possibly months later.
