Why Princess Diana Wouldn’t Break Up With Boyfriend After Prince Charles Divorce
When Princess Diana first began dating Dodi Fayed, the son of billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed, some people were just glad to see her happy, but others had their doubts about her new relationship.
The Princess of Wales began getting close to Dodi in 1997, the year after she finalized her divorce from Prince Charles. However, the romance began to make headlines and the public quickly learned Diana’s love interest had quite a reputation.
The Amazon Prime documentary, “Princess Diana: Behind the Headlines” explores the public’s reaction to Dodi and Diana’s relationship. “He [Dodi] was a playboy. He didn’t have a very good reputation for being upstanding,” People books editor Kim Hubbard said.
According to People Magazine editor Jess Cagle, Diana led a particular lifestyle that required “serious security,” something Dodi could easily offer her.
However, there were some people in the media who exposed Dodi’s wild life and past with drugs in an effort to convince Diana to dump her new boyfriend. “So when we wrote the story we’re all hoping, I really hope this is not her. We wanted more for her than that,” People deputy editor Dan Wakeford explained.
Despite his “party animal” reputation, Diana appeared to enjoy her relationship with Dodi until their deaths in 1997.
