Why Princess Diana’s Portrait At London City Airport Was Removed Without Prior Notice
Princess Diana’s stunning portrait was reportedly removed from the London City Airport’s main terminal, and fans of the late royal couldn’t help but question the management’s decision.
In 1992, Princess Diana visited the London City Airport after its new runway was launched. Shortly after her visit, a photo of Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom was displayed at the main lobby.
One royal fan who recently took a flight at the airport asked where Princess Diana’s portrait was placed after. Another person urged the airport management to display the Princess of Wales’ photo again.
“You must leave the portrait of the Queen of Hearts next to your defibrillator. It’s my favorite observational quip!” the royal fan tweeted.
Shortly after, a spokesperson for the airport explained why they decided to remove the Princess of Wales’ portrait at the main terminal.
“Over the years, London City Airport has welcomed several members of the British royal family. Diana, Princess of Wales, made an official visit on 5th March 1992, to mark the completion of the newly extended runway and tour the airport… The plaque that Diana unveiled can still be found in the Departures lounge, however, the framed photograph next to it has been temporarily removed so we can find a more suitable location,” the spokesperson told Express.
At present, London City Airport is undergoing a massive development program. And once the project is completed, the spokesperson promised royal fans that they will find the perfect place to display Princess Diana’s photo again.
Meanwhile, Princess Diana also has other portraits in various locations across the United Kingdom. One of the late royal’s portraits was painted by John Stanton Ward in 1984. Ten years later, Nelson Shanks painted another portrait of Princess Diana, which she decided to display at Kensington Palace.
Artist Theo Platt’s painting of Princess Diana is currently displayed at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
