She may have approved of both women when it came to them marrying her grandsons and joining the royal family, but that doesn’t mean Queen Elizabeth’s relationships with both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are exactly the same,

According to Express UK, while the queen doesn’t dislike either of her granddaughters-in-law, her initial relationship with Markle, who married Prince Harry in 2018, was a bit warmer, and, in fact, she “steered clear” of meeting Middleton until five years after she began to date Prince William. While the time of courtship between the two couples played a role in how long it took before she met each woman, royal expert Ingrid Seward revealed that things still aren’t overly warm between the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge today.

“The Queen admires Kate tremendously but does not have an intimate relationship with her as they don’t have much in common,” she said. “I think the Queen and Kate have a more serious relationship as obviously Kate holds all the Queen’s hope for the future and she would not want to do anything to upset that.”

“I can’t see what she would have in common with Kate apart from her royal duties,” she added. “The common bond with Kate would be her children and I can’t imagine the Queen spending too much time talking about them; she is a very shy woman, which is why a common subject like horses is so helpful.”

Overall, it’s believed that Middleton’s relationship with the Queen is more formal and proper because of her role in the future of the royal family, and the difference in Markle’s relationship, is believed to be because she doesn’t have a more formal stance. As a result, she has a better bond with the Queen, especially since they also have more in common.

“With Meghan, she would tread very carefully and do her best to make her feel at home,” Seward said. “They have a love of dogs in common and Meghan knows how to make her laugh. The Queen has an acerbic wit and of course, is an excellent mimic so she can be very entertaining—but she never forgets she is Queen even with her grandchildren.”
