Why Queen Elizabeth’s Father Cried Like A Child For An Hour
Queen Elizabeth II’s father King George VI was horrified when he learned that he would be king.
In the 2019 documentary “The Queen Mother: The Reluctant Queen,” royal biographers discussed how the Queen’s father reacted to the news that he was taking over the throne. King George VI was unprepared and was “horrified.”
The monarch’s parents used to be the Duke and Duchess of York. Queen Mother didn’t want to be Queen, so she was pretty “distraught” after learning that her husband would be the next king. Queen Elizabeth II’s family lived a quiet life in a secluded place. King George VIII and Queen Mother’s attention was revolving around their two daughters, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, so when they learned that Prince Edward abdicated the throne it was a “terrifying thought for both of them.”
“When Bertie realised what he had been dreading was actually going to happen he went to visit his mother Queen Mary, who is this incredibly sort of stiff matriarch with an enormous bosom,” royal biographer Jane Ridley said.
“He put his head on her shoulder and cried like a child for an hour. He really had this kind of breakdown.”
Queen Mother was furious with King Edward and Wallis Simpson. She wasn’t happy about her brother-in-law betraying the monarchy, but she also took it as an opportunity to step forward and guide her husband.
When Queen Elizabeth II was 25, she took over the throne from her father after King George VI died of coronary thrombosis amid his battle with lung cancer. Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning monarch.
On Monday, Queen Elizabeth II joined Prince William and Kate Middleton at the Chelsea Flower Show. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were seen approaching the Queen upon her arrival. Both kissed Her Majesty and Middleton performed a quick and perfect curtsy after the kiss.
On Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth II and Middleton made their second reunion for this week by attending the garden party at Buckingham Palace. They stepped out together wearing color-coordinated dresses. Middleton wore a light pink coat dress by Alexander McQueen. On the other hand, Her Majesty showed up in a baby blue coat with a matching hat.
