Why 'Sonic The Hedgehog' May Become Most Profitable Video Game Movie Yet
KEY POINTS
- The latest Sonic the Hedgehog movie is doing well
- The film is doing as well as, if not better than, Detective Pikachu
- It could be one of the most successful video game films of all time
As seen in history, many video game movies have been doomed to fail and are often remembered as campy but lovable films to look back to. However, video game films is about snag yet another win through the release of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie this February. The movie is currently performing well on the box office.
The "Sonic The Hedgehog" 2020 movie is about to rake in $55 million over the course of four days for its four-day projection, according to Deadline. This performance could be better than "Detective Pikachu" movie’s profit performance of $54.3 million in the span of three days. Producing the whole movie cost $81 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and it is about to get its profits in the positive soon.
So far, "Sonic the Hedgehog" is the top movie when it comes to its opening earnings this 2020. Warner Bros’ "Birds of Prey" four day opening earnings is at $18.9 million and currently has total earnings of $61 million. Meanwhile, the Sony and Blumhouse Productions film "Fantasy Island" is expected to earn $15.1 million in the span of four days. As some Marvel movies are upcoming this 2020, "Sonic the Hedgehog" may just enjoy this position for a few more months before it gets unseated from its throne.
Many movies based from video games are mostly known to be flops or barely successful enough to recoup its production costs. From the Super Mario Bros movie in 1993 up to the "Warcraft" film in 2016, many of these movies are not only basic or downright awful when it comes to its stories but have also performed poorly in the market.
However, the release of "Detective Pikachu" have started to turn things around and the trend is looking to continue with "Sonic the Hedgehog." The next upcoming video game film for 2020 is the Impact Pictures and Constantin Films’ "Monster Hunter" movie coming this September 2020. It stars Milla Jovovich of the "Resident Evil" film trilogy series and will have to outperform "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Detective Pikachu’s" earnings to earn a good spot in the history of films based from video games.
