Why Suns Fans Were Wrong To Hope In Durant Being Traded This Offseason
KEY POINTS
- Kevin Durant is staying with the Brooklyn Nets for the foreseeable future
- Phoenix Suns fans were hoping against the idea of acquiring him
- Not pulling the trigger on Durant ensures the Suns' core continues to grow together
The Kevin Durant saga has finally ended with him, and the Brooklyn Nets reportedly coming to terms to stick it out for the next four years and focus on basketball.
The announcement was made by the organization themselves via Twitter and effectively ended the most anticipated story of this season with a whimper.
None are more devastated at this point than Phoenix Suns fans as they were the most heavily linked franchise to making a move for Durant because the player did want to join them for the upcoming season.
As rumors flew around, there was hope that the Suns could blitz the Nets' front office into forcing a deal with them.
With the days passing and nearly two months of speculation, the likelihood of Durant staying in Brooklyn continued to grow as the timing of his trade request was simply off.
Franchises he was interested in had little to no cap room this summer, and giving up an established core plus a boatload of picks to acquire an aging superstar like Durant and his own massive four-year, $194.2 million deal that he signed this offseason was a near impossibility.
Understandably, the Nets put a premium on Durant in terms of what they expected in return for him, and while there were teams who at least took a chance like the Boston Celtics, to think that the Nets would blow it up this quick was never going to happen.
Suns fans have to be the most disappointed at this point since there was growing belief that dragging out talks would put general manager James Jones in a position to strike as Suns insider and the constant voice of Durant-to-Phoenix rumors Flex From Jersey attested.
After it was confirmed that Durant was staying in Brooklyn, Flex tweeted that Jones and the Suns' management will give it another shot at trading for him "if/when the opportunity arrives again."
However, Suns fans have already started to doubt his credibility as an insider during the Durant saga and guaranteed that he would go to the Valley this offseason, with the latest development further putting a dent into his credibility.
It would not be that hard to think that Durant and the Nets may part ways sometime in the future if things do not work out between him and the polarizing pair of Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons.
Not trading for Durant may turn out to be the best course of action for Phoenix this offseason as it ensures that fan-favorites Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson are set to continue growing in head coach Monty Williams' system.
Suns fans are no stranger to despair at this point in their storied history, but selling the farm to acquire the versatile scoring forward only confirms their belief in having depth over superstars.
