Why Was Richard Sherman Arrested? NFL Star Investigated For Burglary Domestic Violence
NFL star Richard Sherman was arrested Wednesday morning and sent to Seattle’s King County Correctional Facility. The former Seattle Seahawks star is being investigated for multiple crimes.
Sherman has been accused of burglary domestic violence, which is a felony. The 33-year-old was denied bail, though the Redmond Police Department told ESPN that it is standard procedure for suspects who have been accused of domestic violence and have yet to appear before a judge.
According to TMZ, a police K9 was forced to take Sherman down after he tried to break into a family member's home in Redmond, Washington. The Redmond Police Department received a call from the house at 2 a.m. PT, and Sherman was uncooperative with authorities who arrived on the scene, TMZ reports.
Sherman is also being investigated by the Washington State Police for a possible hit-and-run and DUI, according to reports. A car registered to Sherman hit a concrete barrier and was abandoned in a nearby parking lot, police say.
The single-car crash happened about an hour after police were called to the residence where Sherman was arrested.
"We were made aware of an arrest last night of one of our player leaders for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved," the NFL Players Association said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor events closely as more facts are made available to us."
A future Hall of Famer, Sherman has spent the last decade in the NFL. The cornerback won a Super Bowl and made four Pro Bowls with the Seahawks from 2011-2017. Sherman played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2018 to 2020, making a Super Bowl and Pro Bowl appearance.
Sherman is not currently signed with an NFL team.
