Why Was 'Rizzoli & Isles' Canceled After 7 Seasons?
“Rizzoli & Isles” will solve their last crimes this year. The TNT procedural drama will end after Season 7 airs later this year. The cancellation might shock many fans, especially since the show is still successful.
The drama, based on Tess Gerritsen’s book series, follows Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and medical examiner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander) as they work together to solve homicide cases. The show launched in 2010 and is actually still doing well in ratings; On average, over 11 million viewers tuned in for the sixth season. However, the creative team behind the show decided that they’d rather leave viewers wanting more, TNT President Kevin Reilly revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour.
“That will be the final season,” Reilly said (via Entertainment Weekly). “I think both ladies have had a really satisfying experience. I don’t know that they wouldn’t do anymore, but I think they felt very comfortable that it had a good run. It felt like it was time. Everyone said, ‘Let’s go out and finish 13 great ones and call it a day.’”
The news comes the day after Alexander won a People’s Choice Award for her performance in the show. She won in the favorite cable television actress category. “I wish I could break it up into a million pieces and share it with every one of you,” the actress said in a video on Twitter. “Thank you so, so, so much.”

Neither Alexander nor Harmon have acknowledged the cancellation on social media yet.
“Rizzoli & Isles” is the latest cancellation from TNT, but at least they’ll get a final season – even if it is shortened to 13 episodes. Their fellow shows “Legends,” “Public Morals” and “Agent X” weren’t so lucky. All were canceled due to low ratings last month, Variety reports.
“Rizzoli & Isles” Season 7, the final season, is expected to air this summer on TNT.
