Why Wasn’t Zac Efron At The ‘High School Musical’ Reunion?
Sorry, “High School Musical” fans. Troy Bolton will be missing from the class reunion when the 10-year anniversary celebration airs on the Disney Channel Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Although much hype has surrounded the “High School Musical” reunion, fans of the 2006 Disney Channel television film learned one of its major stars would be missing in action. It was confirmed Zac Efron would not be joining his former co-stars — Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale — for the movie’s 10-year reunion.
Cast members were happy to share photographs of their reunion, which was filmed in Los Angeles Sunday. And while everybody appeared thrilled to be back in the Wildcats school gym, fans voiced their outrage when they noticed Efron was missing.
Many speculated Efron chose to skip the event to avoid seeing his ex-girlfriend, Hudgens. The two met during the filming of “High School Musical” in 2005 and began to date shortly afterward. However, Efron and Hudgens broke up in December 2010, according to Us Weekly.
Hudgens has since moved on with “The Shannara Chronicles” star Austin Butler, and Efron is dating model Sami Miró. But the awkward run-in was reportedly not a factor in Efron’s decision to skip the “High School Musical” reunion. A Disney Channel representative told Billboard Efron was unable to film with the rest of the cast because of previously made commitments. The reunion taping conflicted with the promotion of his movie, “Dirty Grandpa,” which hits theaters Friday, Jan. 22.
This doesn’t mean that the reunion will be Efron-less, though. A press release about the 10-year anniversary event confirmed the actor prerecorded a message for fans that will air during the special.
The “High School Musical” 10-year anniversary reunion telecast will air Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. EST. For those looking to watch the 2006 film, Freeform (the new name of ABC Family) will air the movie Saturday, Jan. 23, at 4:30 p.m. EST and Sunday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. EST.
