Why You Recognize ‘Perry Mason’ Cast Ahead Of HBO Premiere

“Perry Mason” is a brand-new show on HBO, but it’s filled with familiar faces. The drama, which premieres Sunday, has quite a cast, and International Business Times is here to help audiences figure out where they’ve seen the stars before.

Matthew Rhys stars as Perry Mason, a private investigator haunted by his World War I experiences and dealing with a failing marriage. Audiences may recognize Rhys from his longtime roles on “The Americans” or “Brothers and Sisters.” He also starred in Academy Award-nominated films “The Post” and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”

John Lithgow plays Elias Birchard “E.B.” Jonathan, a struggling attorney who often hires Mason. Lithgow’s nearly 50-year career on screen has led to a long resume full of recognizable titles: “3rd Rock From The Sun,” “Footloose,” “Shrek,” “Dreamgirls,” “Dexter,” “How I Met Your Mother.” The list goes on, but most recently, Lithgow has become known as Winston Churchill on Netflix’s “The Crown.”

Juliet Rylance portrays Della Street, E.B. Jonathan’s creative legal secretary. She has starred in “The Knick” and “McMafia.”

Chris Chalk plays beat cop Paul Drake. Chalk played Yusef Salaam in Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed Netflix miniseries “When They See Us.” TV fans may also remember him from “Gotham,” “Underground,” “The Newsroom” and “Homeland.”

Tatiana Maslany joins the cast as Sister Alice McKeegan, the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God. The actress is recognizable from her Emmy-winning roles as the Project Leda clones on BBC America's “Orphan Black,” and since then, she has been starring in some small but acclaimed dramas such as “Stronger” and “Destroyer.”

Lili Taylor plays Birdy McKeegan, Sister Alice’s closest advisor. She has previously starred in “American Crime,” “Hemlock Grove” and “Almost Human.”

Gayle Rankin plays Emily Dodson, the mother of a 1-year-old kidnapping victim. Netflix fans know her as Sheila the She-Wolf on “GLOW,” but others have seen her in movies such as “The Greatest Showman” and “Her Smell.”

Nate Corddry is seen in the role of Matthew Dodson, a seemingly innocuous man whose secrets come to light after his son is kidnapped. Corddry has popped up all over fan-favorite TV shows such as “Mom,” “Fosse/Verdon” and “Mindhunter.”

Shea Whigham portrays Pete Strickland, Mason’s helper. Whigham has starred in a string of hit shows like “Waco,” “Homecoming,” “Fargo,” “Agent Carter” and “Boardwalk Empire.”

Robert Patrick joins the cast as Herman Baggerly, who hires Perry Mason and E.B. Jonathan. He has been seen on “True Blood,” “Scorpion” and “Appalachian Outlaws.”

Stephen Root plays Maynard Barnes, the district attorney. Fans might recall seeing him in movies such as “Office Space,” “Bombshell,” “Selma” or “Get Out” as well as TV shows including “Justified,” “Barry” and “The Man in High Castle.”

Jefferson Mays stars as Virgil Sheets, the city mortician. Mays has been in plenty of mystery and law-based shows, including “I Am The Night,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “The Blacklist.”

Veronica Falcón plays Lupe Gibbs, a pilot. The actress has previously been seen on “Perpetual Grace, LTD” and “Queen of the South.”
