Wiener schnitzel, a flavorful veal cutlet from Vienna, Austria, has evolved to be a cultural hallmark of the country's culinary spectrum.

The savory treat, which is a favorite among locals and tourists alike, also found immense popularity outside the country due to its taste that is pretty much aligned with old world Europe. The word "wiener" represents its homeland's very name as Wien stands for Vienna.

According to a popular legend, the recipe was first invented in northern Italy, and in 1857 Austrian Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky brought it to Austria and presented it before the Habsburg emperor, the then ruler of Vienna, calling it a "deliciously breaded veal cutlet."

Those who grew up in Austria have vivid memories of the tasty treat being a predominant part of their meals. To honor this dish, Sept. 9 is marked as the Wiener Schnitzel Day, during which people are encouraged to try their hands on the recipe.
