A woman in the northern Indian state of Punjab killed her husband by choking him in order to elope with her lover. Local media reports said early Tuesday that the woman, identified as Simran Kaur, is a mother of two children and is currently on the run.

Police said Kaur first laced her husband's food with poison on Sunday night. She then feared he might not die, so she decided to choke him to death. She later dropped her children at her father's house before eloping with her lover.

Local media India Today reported that the accused was married to her now-deceased husband for 12 years. She was in an extramarital relationship with another man. The woman's family had learned about the affair and asked her to end the relationship.

The murder came to light when her children told their grandfather that their mother had choked their father with a rope. An investigation was underway into the alleged murder.

Kaur's children, who were shocked by the incident, also demanded the toughest punishment for their mother, demanding that she be hanged to death.

After learning about what had happened at the home, Kaur's father went to her daughter's home and found his son-in-law in a critical condition with foaming in the mouth. A rope was also tied around his neck. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police, who have filed a case against Kaur and her lover, have launched a manhunt for the two.
