A 58-year-old Polk County, Florida woman who spent more than a week at a hospital to recover from COVID-19 allegedly discovered her husband had died from the virus upon returning home over a week ago.

"It was like walking into a horror film, and I wish I had never seen him like that because I can’t get that picture out of my head," the woman, identified as Lisa Steadman, was quoted as saying by Fox 13.

Steadman's 55-year-old husband, Ron, had tested positive for the novel coronavirus before she got her result and was treated at a walk-in clinic before being sent home with medications, according to a NewsChannel 8 report.

"They sent him home with medicine and stuff because he wasn’t in distress or anything. It was just like he had a bad cold," Steadman said. On the other hand, she had to go to the emergency room at Winter Haven Hospital after catching the virus and passing out.

Steadman, who was also dealing with other unrelated illnesses at the time, spent eight days at the hospital.

"I thought I was going to die. I couldn't breathe. I couldn’t' stop throwing up," Steadman said.

She contacted the Winter Haven Police Department while she was hospitalized for a welfare check on Ron after he told her his phone was not working properly, according to the NewsChannel 8 report.

"He had told me that his phone was acting up, and wouldn’t hold a charge. Monday, I couldn’t get a hold of him. So I sent the Winter Haven Police Department over there to do a wellness check. They talked to him. He was fine," Steadman said.

Winter Haven police spokesperson Jamie Brown reportedly confirmed a welfare check was conducted

Lisa assumed that her husband's phone battery had died after he did not answer her phone call the next day. But she discovered that Ron had died in their bedroom upon returning home on Aug. 18.

Additionally, the couple's dogs were close to death from lack of food and water.

"It's just been a nightmare. just a nightmare," Steadman said.

Ron's doctor later told Lisa her husband had died from COVID-related complications.

The couple had been unvaccinated, but Steadman now plans to take a shot following the incident, according to Fox 13.

"Both of us felt that it hadn’t been tested enough yet. Now after being in the hospital and talking with my doctor, when I am able to take it, I will in September," she was quoted as saying by NewsChannel 8.

She was reportedly raising money to help pay for the unexpected costs in connection to her husband's death, which included the cleaning service and some bedroom furniture replacements.
