Will Aliens Kill Us? 'Covenant' Director Thinks The Threat Is Real

Are Aliens real? Will they kill us? If Ridley Scott is to be believed, then most certainly. With the May 19 premiere of “Alien: Covenant” looming on the horizon, its director has been busy promoting its release. It seems only natural that the topics of other intelligent life would come up, but the “Alien” director revealed he thinks we should be wary of making contact.

“I believe in superior beings,” Scott, 79, said in a Thursday interview with international news agency Agence France-Presse. “I think it is certainly likely. An expert I was talking to at NASA said to me, ‘Have you ever looked in the sky at night? You mean to tell me we are it?’ That’s ridiculous.”

Scott then went on to describe the statistical unlikelihood that we’re alone in our ever-expanding universe. “The experts have now put a number on it having assessed what is out there. They say that there are between 100 and 200 entities that could be having a similar evolution to us right now,” he said, perhaps referring to estimations among experts that there are between 100 billion and 200 billion galaxies in the universe — an estimate that will likely grow.

“So when you see a big thing in the sky, run for it,” he added. “Because they are a lot smarter than we are, and if you are stupid enough to challenge them you will be taken out in three seconds.” Point taken!

Perhaps most revealing, Scott says he was surprised by the shock and horror of audiences for the first of his “Alien” films. “Everybody was half underneath the seat watching by the time you get to the kitchen scene. There was a woman underneath the seat with her husband holding her. I said this is not healthy.”

Scott, however, reportedly fears nothing. “Nothing scares me. I have a 9mm (pistol),” he said.

“Alien: Covenant” is the sixth film in Scott’s “Alien” series, the first of which debuted in 1979. The film is the second in the three-part “Alien” prequel series and follows Scott’s “Prometheus.” It’s official synopsis reads:

The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, and Danny McBride star in the film.

“Alien: Covenant” opens May 19 in theaters everywhere.
