Will Cam Newton Join The Patriots? New England Still Favored To Be QB's Next Team
No matter how committed the New England Patriots appear to making Jarrett Stidham their starting quarterback, there is still speculation that the team will replace Tom Brady with an established veteran. Multiple sportsbooks continue to list the Patriots as the betting favorites to sign Cam Newton.
DraftKings Sportsbook gives New England +300 odds to be Newton’s next team, putting them well ahead of four teams tied for second at +800. It’s a similar story at BetOnline, where the Patriots are +400 favorites to sign Newton, followed by the Washington Redskins (+700) and Tennessee Titans (+800).
Newton has been a free agent since late March when he was released by the Carolina Panthers. He was cut just a few days after Brady left the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Patriots didn’t draft a quarterback, and they passed up the chance to acquire a couple of starting-caliber signal callers. Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston likely would’ve accepted the opportunity to start in New England since they were forced to accept backup roles elsewhere in free agency.
New England added Brian Hoyer, who has spent two different stints as a backup quarterback with the Patriots.
Stidham was New England’s fourth-round draft pick in 2019. He only attempted four passes as a rookie. The 23-year-old completed two passes and had one pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown.
Brady has entered each of the last 18 seasons as the Patriots’ starter. Newton was the Panthers’ starter in each of his first nine NFL seasons.
Newton didn’t play after Week 2 last season because of a season-ending foot injury. The veteran made three Pro Bowls and won the 2015 MVP award with Carolina.
Newton had 3,395 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, 13 interceptions, a 94.2 passer rating and 488 rushing yards in 14 starts two seasons ago.
