Will ‘Carnival Row’ Return For Season 2? Renewal, Cancellation Details
“Carnival Row” just released Friday on Amazon, but plenty of binge-watchers have already finished all eight episodes. After that finale, many are anxious to know: will “Carnival Row” return for Season 2?
Luckily, Amazon Prime Video answered that question before Season 1 even premiered. “Carnival Row” was renewed for Season 2 a month ahead of the series premiere, so fans don’t need to worry about cancellation.
That’s good news since there was a cliffhanger at the end of Season 1 (spoilers ahead!). After Piety (Indira Varma) was outed as the one controlling the darkasher killing everyone who knew Philo (Orlando Bloom) was half-fae, she went on the run. Jonah (Andrew Gower) is using her disappearance to push forward an anti-critch agenda.
The finale showed the city being closed and all critch moved to Carnival Row. Even characters working in upper-class houses like Afissa (Tracey Wilkinson) are shoved into the ghetto. When Philo is told that only critch can be in the Row, he outs himself as half-fae to be with Vignette (Cara Delevingne).
In Season 2, everyone will be in on Philo’s secret, but they won’t welcome him with open arms.
“He makes the decision to cross over and live behind the wall with Vignette, not just as a critch, but as a half-blood,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim told TheWrap. “So in Season 2, Philo is — to use a phrase from Episode 2 — neither man nor fae. He himself is both, but not really respected by the fae who still see him as a copper. And of course he’s still seen as a critch by the humans. So he’s really, in Season 2, he’s a man without a country.”
Of course, there will be trouble on the row. The extremist group is rising and the Black Raven isn’t gone either. Guggenheim and co-creator Travis Beacham told Entertainment Weekly that both storylines would play a major part in Season 2, but the new episodes will also get out of the Burgue.
“As we’re drawing in on some stories, as we’re putting some characters behind the wall, it felt necessary to look outwards with other stories,” Beacham said. “With Imogen [Tamzin Merchant] and Agreus [David Gyasi], we’re definitely looking outwards, and just from a purely visual standpoint, they’re going to find themselves in some very different environments in season 2. And they’re going to end up in some places that we’ve heard of and are probably curious about.”
It sounds like the writers intend for the series to be renewed several times. They revealed that they’re planting seeds for Season 4 in Season 2.
No release date has been set for “Carnival Row” Season 2.
