President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani may be next in line to receive a presidential pardon from federal prosecution.

Two sources told the New York Times that Giuliani met with Trump in late November to discuss a preemptive pardon. It’s unclear which of the two brought up the subject or what exactly Giuliani is seeking immunity from. Giuliani has not been charged with a crime.

Giuliani faced a federal investigation last summer for his business in Ukraine and participation in the ousting of the U.S. diplomat there, an incident that sparked Trump’s eventual impeachment. Robert Costello, a lawyer for Giuliani, implied the investigation was ongoing when speaking to the Times.

“He’s not concerned about this investigation, because he didn’t do anything wrong and that’s been our position from day 1,” Costello said.

Less clear is whether Trump would be willing to grant Giuliani a pardon. Trump has been generous in his application of pardon powers, shielding those loyal to him from federal prosecution and using his influence with the Department of Justice to interfere with investigations.

The most recent supporter to benefit is former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who in 2017 pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. The Justice Department released language Monday pardoning him from “any and all possible offenses” committed during the Mueller investigation. Politico noted that some legal experts say it was the broadest immunity granted since the pardon of Richard Nixon.

There are, however, indications that Trump has been less pleased with Giuliani in recent days. While Giuliani has been a steadfast advocate for some of Trump’s most outrageous claims and led efforts to undermine the results of the presidential election, his recent conspiracy-laden press conference rife with technical issues and poor presentation drew concerns from Trump that the self-proclaimed “elite strike force team” was a liability, CNBC reported.

Despite numerous court filings, Trump's legal team has failed to win a single legal victory in their efforts to overturn the election results. After a viral video of hair dye streaking down Giuliani's face and odd comments from other Trump lawyers, the president reportedly wondered if his team was made of “fools that are making him look bad.”

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a staunch Trump ally, called the legal team a “national embarrassment.”

Giuliani has denied that discussion of a pardon ever happened, telling the New York Daily News that it was “not true at all.” He reiterated that position in a tweet minutes later.
