Will Phil Mickelson Win Another Major? PGA Championship Could Be Lefty’s Last
Phil Mickelson made history Sunday with his stunning PGA Championship victory, becoming the oldest golfer to ever win a major. The 50-year-old recognized that another win is probably not in his future.
“It's very possible that this is the last tournament I ever win,” Mickelson said after shooting a 1-over 73 for a first-place finish. “Like, if I'm being realistic. But it's also very possible that I may have had a little bit of a breakthrough in some of my focus and maybe I go on a little bit of a run, I don't know. But the point is that there's no reason why I or anybody else can't do it at a later age. It just takes a little bit more work.”
Mickelson’s win came out of nowhere. Now a six-time major champion, Mickelson hadn’t won one of golf’s four premiere tournaments since 2013. His last PGA Tour victory was the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Mickelson had two tournament wins from 2014-2020.
Heading into the 2021 PGA Championship, Mickelson had 250/1 odds or worse at various sportsbooks, giving the left-hander virtually no chance of emerging victorious. Mickelson is viewed as more of a threat at upcoming majors, though it would still be a surprise to see him finish ahead of the field.
FanDuel Sportsbook gives Mickelson 50/1 odds to win the 2021 U.S. Open in June, putting him behind 23 other golfers. For The Open Championship in July, PointsBet Sportsbook gives Mickelson 66/1 odds.
Tiger Woods was 43 years old when he won the 2019 Masters in one of sports’ all-time great comeback stories. Jack Nicklaus was 46 years old in his historic 1986 Masters championship. Julius Boros won the 1968 PGA Championship at 48 years old, setting the record that Mickelson broke Sunday.
“Certainly, one of the moments I'll cherish my entire life,” Mickelson said. “I don't know how to describe the feeling of excitement and fulfillment and accomplishment to do something when – you know, of this magnitude – when very few people thought that I could.”
Mickelson won his first three majors in 2004, 2005 and 2006. He won his only green jacket at the 2010 Masters.
