Prince Philip previously said that he wants his funeral to be private and his death to receive no fuss from his family, friends, and supporters.

But on the online forum site Quora, royal fans weighed in on whether or not this could actually happen since he’s the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Philip also served the nation for a couple of decades before he retired two years ago.

Eileen Wood, a Republican since 1977, said that Prince Philip is entitled to have a full state funeral with all the bells and whistles. After all, he was a decorated naval officer, the Queen’s Consort, and a Royal Duke.

“However, the Duke had reportedly said he would prefer a very quiet, private funeral. So the end result will be somewhere in between… After 70 years of good and faithful service to the Crown and country, the Duke’s passing cannot be ignored or downplayed… He cannot just pass quietly into the night, with no fanfare, no accolades, no acknowledgment,” she said.

Paul Rodgers, a former student at the City University London, said that regardless if Prince Philip dies before or after Her Majesty, he would still be entitled to full royal honors due to his service to his wife and the United Kingdom.

But Quentin Langley, a former student at Cardiff University, said that the decision would ultimately come from the government and the royal family.

“Ultimately, the PM gets to decide, but will probably allow considerable deference to the monarch on a family matter,” he said.

Charles G. Stevens, a resident of the United Kingdom, said that Prince Philip’s death will be a massive event. There will be a lying-in-state at St. James’s Palace, where Princess Diana’s funeral was also held.

The full state funeral will also include a gun carriage drawn by the Royal Navy and a military procession will also be held. The military-style funeral will most likely take place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
