Will There Be A ‘Free Rein’ Season 3? Cast Reveals Show's Future
All 10 episodes of “Free Rein” Season 2 dropped on Netflix on Friday, but fans are already begging on social media for more. And more they will get.
If your binge of the series, which follows an American teenager who moves to an English island and befriends an untamed horse, is complete, you can rest easy knowing that more of what you love is on the way. Before the new season of the show had even been released, Jaylen Barron, who stars as main character Zoey, revealed that it had already been renewed for Season 3.
“Free rein season 2 comes out July 6,” Barron wrote on Twitter on June 21. “AND we are already filming season 3 along with 2 specials!”
The fact that the equestrian-themed series will be back for Season 3 wasn’t the only exciting news contained in her tweet. That last part, about two specials, was also brand-new information. So far, the show has never had any specials during its two, 10-episode seasons.
While Barron gave details about all the upcoming “Free Rein” content fans can expect, her co-star Bruce Herbelin-Earle (Marcus) gave hints about when viewers might be able to feast their eyes on it all.
“Will the third season be next year?” one fan asked the actor on Twitter at the tail end of June.
He responded that fans will be “getting more FR content A LOT SOONER than you think.”
Though there is no official release date yet for the new specials or Season 3 episodes, one can make a fairly good assumption based on this tweet. Since the Twitter user thinks the content won’t arrive until next year and Herbelin-Earle said it’s sooner, then fresh material might be here before 2018 ends.
Herbelin-Earle once again teased that the show would have more episodes before we know it when he wrote on Instagram, “Queue the ‘when is season 3 coming’ comments… #soonerthanyouthink,” on Friday.
When exactly could that be? While IMDb often doesn’t have up-to-date info, it currently states that a new episode of “Free Rein” is expected to be released on Nov. 22, which could be a special, and another episode on Feb. 14, 2019, which could be the second special. Then it says the rest of the episodes are expected to be out at some other point in 2019. While those dates aren’t official, they would fit with what the cast members teased.
While waiting for the official return dates, fans can rewatch the series and think about all that’s to come, while also pondering the questions that Seasons 1 and 2 raised. Like, how much time has passed since Zoe first got to the English island?
The first season took place over the course of summer 2017 and ended at the very end of August because the horse competition was on Aug. 27. Marcus was accepted to the riding academy at the end of the season, and at the start of Season 2, he’s just about to leave for it. The second season takes place over a few months because everyone’s training for Nationals.
So, if Season 2 takes place during the fall, why don’t any of the characters attend school? Hopefully, Season 3 and the specials will explore more of what school life is like on the island and how the characters balance studying with training.
In the meantime, “Free Rein” Season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
