Will There Be A ‘Sharknado 7’?

“Sharknado” has become a beloved franchise on Syfy, and some fans might even want to start counting down to “Sharknado 7” right after the sixth movie’s premiere on Sunday. However, they’ll be disappointed to learn that Sunday is (probably) the last time fans will see a new one premiere.

It turns out the official “Sharknado 6” title, “The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time,” should be interpreted literally. It’s both the final installment, and the story is about time travel.

At the end of “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming,” Fin (Ian Ziering) was alone after Earth was ravaged by shark tornadoes. In “The Last Sharknado,” he’ll travel through time to stop the original Sharknado.

Along with Ziering, fans can also expect returning cast members Tara Reid, Cassie Scerbo, Vivica A. Fox, Charles Hittinger and more. Anthony C. Ferrante will direct for the sixth time, and writer Scotty Mullen is responsible for the screenplay.

The final movie marks the first time the script hasn’t been written by Thunder Levin, who created the series. The writer actually has a cameo in “Sharknado 6,” despite passing the baton to Mullen, who co-wrote the fifth movie with him.

While Levin didn’t write the screenplay, he may have still influenced the story. In 2016, the writer said he had ideas for a fifth, sixth and even seventh movie.

After the fourth movie, he told ScreenRant that he officially submitted ideas for three more “Sharknado” sequels. “I have actually developed a story arc for Sharknado 5 through 7 – for the next three movies – and I’ve submitted that to The Asylum and we’ll see if they want to run with it or not and we’ll see if Syfy wants to do any more of these. If they do, I’m ready to go and there’s no telling what you might see.”

Hardcore fans have been holding onto that quote, hoping it means Syfy is just tricking audiences into thinking this is the last “Sharknado” movie. However, it seems more likely that Levin’s ideas for the three movies were compressed into two. During the San Diego Comic-Con, Ferrante revealed he has known what the end of the series would be since the fourth movie, Syfy Wire reports.

Of course, there’s always a chance Syfy will want to give the series a victory lap. Viewers will have to wait and see if “Sharknado 7” ever gets the green light, but for now, they’ll have to consider “The Last Sharknado” the final installment.
