Williams-Sonoma Quick Bread Recall 2016: Meyer Lemon Poppy Seed Mix May Contain Salmonella
As a precaution, Williams-Sonoma has recalled a “limited quantity” of its Meyer Lemon Poppy Seed Quick Bread mix because of possible salmonella contamination.
The culinary retailer initiated the recall, Food and Drug Administration said in a release issued Saturday, because the bulk milk powder in the mix may have been contaminated by the bacteria. While no salmonella bacteria was actually found in the product, the company decided to recall the mix to err on the side of caution.
Williams-Sonoma is not the only brand or food supplier that has had to recall a product due to possibly contaminated milk powder. In the past week, other products containing Valley Milk Products LLC powdered milk ingredients were recalled due to salmonella contamination, affecting brands like Publix Super Markets and Deep River Snacks. The original recall for Valley Milk Products was issued by the FDA earlier this month. Although no bacteria could be found in some of the products, like the Williams-Sonoma mix, retailers decided to recall any product that might have been made with the powdered milk product, CNN reported. Additional food items like Stonewall Kitchen pancake and waffle mixes were recalled, along with New Hope Mills crepe mix. The FDA announcement for the Williams-Sonoma product did not mention the ingredient supplier of its powdered milk.
Williams-Sonoma was able to recall the products in question fully since they were marked by a specific SKU and a “best by” date of January 2018. The bread mix has been shipped only since August, the FDA reported.
Williams-Sonoma has urged shoppers to stop using the Williams-Sonoma Meyer Lemon Poppy Seed Quick Bread product if they feature the SKU and date, and to return the mixes to the store for a full refund.
Entire grocery stores were impacted by the powdered milk recall, Food Safety News said. Albertsons, HEB and Safeway stores all recalled more than 60 baking products made with milk from Valley Mile Products LLC. Only the select grocery retail locations in a few states issued the recall.
