Windows 10 Network Error: How To Reset And Restore Connection Using Batch File
KEY POINTS
- A batch file can force reboot a network connection
- Network interface connection establishes and maintains network connections
- Microsoft issued an update that patches NIC failure
In the post-COVID world, where almost everything is done online, the network connection problems associated with Windows 10 often impact our alternative lifestyle hugely. Here, IBT lists out a few simple tips to reset and restore your device’s connections using a batch file.
A modern network interface connector (NIC) establishes and maintains a device’s network connection. Through software updates, NICs can handle Microsoft and other vendor’s constant updates in order to keep your devices protected from malicious attacks, according to the Tech Republic.
However, there are certain instances when an NIC unexplainably malfunctions and provides poor network connectivity. While some cases may require the purchase of a new NIC replacement, some Windows 10 devices could go with a simple batch file resetting.
First, type Windows Key + R to display the command prompt and type cmd. Key in “netsh interface show interface“ on the text box and press Enter to display the list of installed network connections on the Windows 10 device.
Get the Interface Name of the problematic NIC. Open Notepad to create a batch file and type the following using their specific spacing, format and order.
@ECHO OFF
cls
netsh interface set interface PROBLEM disable
netsh interface set interface PROBLEM enable
pause
Replace the word “PROBLEM” with the Interface Name of the problematic NIC copied from the command prompt.
Click Save As, key in the file name, and make sure it ends with “.bat” so that it is saved as a batch file. Save the file on the Desktop folder.
To reset the Windows 10 connection using the created batch file, head over to the file location. Right-click on the batch file and click Run as Administrator.
The batch file reset disables and immediately enables the network connection forcing a reboot to the Windows 10 NIC. This should result in a more stable signal. If the problem continues, troubleshooting or an optional update could do the job.
Microsoft recently issued an update that brings several improvements and fixes on certain issues such as failed NICs. The KB5000842 March 2021 “C” update for Windows 10 versions 2004 and 20H2 addresses an issue that stops a cluster network interface from working for a short time, WCCF Tech reported.
