Jan. 17 is marked as Winnie the Pooh Day. It is an official holiday which celebrates the main character from the series of celebrated children’s books that are centered around a silly bear and his group of friends.

Winnie the Pooh is a character that was originally created in the year 1926 by an author named, A.A. Milne. The story was about the anthropomorphic bear was based on a teddy bear that belonged to Milne’s young son, Christopher. With that in mind, Milne created the character named Christopher Robin who was also a young boy. Milne also gave Pooh other animal friends such as Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, and Owl, which were all based on his son’s toys.

It was in the year 1961 that Walt Disney bought the rights to Winnie the Pooh, according to an article in the BBC. Once Disney acquired the rights, it added the character of Gopher and subsequently created many movies and TV series based on the original stories.

In the recent years, Winnie the Pooh has turned out to be one of the most popular characters with Disney putting out feature-length movies that include more modern stories such as “The Tigger Movie” and “Pooh’s Heffalump Movie.”

To celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day, here are a few sayings attributed to him that represent the spirit of the friendly imaginary bear:

1. “Some people care too much. I think it's called love.”

2. “It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?”

3. “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”

4. “If the person you are talking to doesn't appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.”

5. "I don’t feel very much like Pooh today," said Pooh.

"There there," said Piglet. "I’ll bring you tea and honey until you do.”

6. “What I like doing best is Nothing."

"How do you do Nothing," asked Pooh after he had wondered for a long time.

"Well, it's when people call out at you just as you're going off to do it, 'What are you going to do, Christopher Robin?' and you say, 'Oh, Nothing,' and then you go and do it."

"It means just going along, listening to all the things you can't hear, and not bothering."

"Oh!" said Pooh.”

7. “Just because an animal is large, it doesn't mean he doesn't want kindness; however big Tigger seems to be, remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo.”

8. “If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you.”

9. “It’s always useful to know where a friend-and-relation is, whether you want him or whether you don’t.”

10. “We will be friends until forever, just you wait and see.”
