Winter Snowstorm Nemo Cancels Nearly 5,000 Flights As 'Historic Blizzard' Pelts Northeast; Twitter Reacts To Axed Flights

Almost 5,000 airline flights were canceled Friday because of the winter snowstorm dubbed Nemo, and the problems at U.S. Northeast airports are expected to continue until Saturday.

Nearly all airports in the New England-New York area were at a standstill Friday as of 4 p.m. EST, USA Today reported.

Representatives of Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:DAL), the JetBlue Airways Corp. (NASDAQ:JBLU), and United Continental Holdings Inc. (NYSE:UAL) told the newspaper flights would most likely resume by Saturday afternoon, but it all depends on the storm.

Rob Maruster, JetBlue's chief operating officer, said the airline's New England-based flights would probably resume around 6 p.m. Saturday, but, again, it all depends on the storm.

As of Friday at 7 p.m., airlines cumulatively had axed almost 3,600 flights for that day and nearly 1,400 for Saturday, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

FlightAware reported that a "majority" of scheduled flights for New York's LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport would be canceled Friday, as they would be at airports in Boston, Hartford, Conn., Providence, R.I., and elsewhere in the Northeast Saturday.

Considering the weather, Delta announced it would be flexible in rescheduling canceled flights: "Delta is closely monitoring conditions along the storm's forecast path and encourages customers to consider moving up, postponing or re-routing their travel to avoid possible inconvenience from expected flight delays."

Those affected by the snowstorm have taken to Twitter to share some disgruntled posts over the inclement weather.
