Wisconsin Woman Repeatedly Poisoned Husband With Animal Euthanasia Drugs In His Coffee: Officials
A Wisconsin woman repeatedly poisoned her 70-year-old husband with animal euthanasia drugs in his morning coffee. The 50-year-old has been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide for poisoning the victim three times between July and August last year, officials said.
Amanda Chapin of Monroe was arrested after she allegedly poisoned her veterinarian husband, Gary Chapin, by adding barbiturates to his coffee. She was charged on Dec. 28 in Lafayette County, NBC News reported.
Amanda and Gary got married in March after they met online and dated for a few months. Just three months into the marriage, Amanda allegedly forged the signature of one of Gary's children on a power-of-attorney document and made her husband amend his house deed to her name, claiming his "children would leave her homeless" if he died, 27 ABC reported.
In less than three weeks after the quit claim deed on the house was done, Amanda reportedly poisoned Gary for the first time. Gary felt "underwater" and unsteady after he finished his morning coffee with Amanda on July 18, 2022. He was treated in the hospital for two days, but medics could not determine the cause of his symptoms.
A few days later, Gary told one of his daughters that he was "done" with the relationship because Amanda was violent, the criminal complaint alleged.
Amanda reportedly poisoned him for the second time on August 2, 2022, in a similar manner. However, the symptoms were less severe compared to the July incident.
The third time he was allegedly poisoned was on August 21, 2022. Gary fell into a coma for four days, and blood tests revealed barbiturates in his system.
Gary used these drugs to put down Amanda's dog a few weeks back and so she knew where they were kept, according to the criminal complaint. After the incident, Gary's son filed for a restraining order against Amanda on his father's behalf.
However, Amanda violated the restraining order the next month by sending her husband a suicide note via email. In the email, Amanda repeatedly denied poisoning Gary and said she has decided to kill herself because his children would "destroy" her, records said.
When police arrived for a welfare check at the hotel where Amanda stayed, she was found unconscious. Amanda survived the suicide attempt after she was taken to the hospital. Gary filed for divorce the next day.
According to court records, Amanda is on a $10,000 cash bond and no contact order with the victim and his family. She is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 12. If convicted, she could face sentencing up to 60 years in prison.
