‘Wolverine 3’ Producer Reveals Film Will Be Set In The Future, Fuels ‘Old Man Logan’ Adaptation Rumors
Following the success of 20th Century Fox’s “Deadpool,” all eyes are currently on the “X-Men” franchise as the studio puts the finishing touches on one of its most iconic characters. The third “Wolverine” movie is still shrouded in mystery, but thanks to some plot details revealed by a producer, fans now have a good idea what the film will be about.
According to CinemaBlend, producer Simon Kinberg revealed in an interview that the third standalone “Wolverine” movie, which currently doesn’t have a title, will be another time exploration movie. However, unlike previous “X-Men” films, which explored the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the new “Wolverine” will take place in the future.
Because of the time period setting, many fans now believe that the rumors of an “Old Man Logan” adaptation that have been circulating for months are true. Previously Hugh Jackman avoided confirming rumors that he would star in an adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s storyline to MTV International. The 8-issue plot takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where super villains have conquered the United States and killed off most of the major heroes. After a tragedy involving his former X-Men team, Logan is living in seclusion and refusing to draw his claws ever again. That is until the hero stumbles into a mission he simply cannot ignore.
Unfortunately for fans of the comic plotline, the comment from Kinberg doesn’t yet count as confirmation that “Wolverine 3” will feature a grey-haired Hugh Jackman as the grizzled veteran hero with a tortured past. However, given the fact that the “Old Man Logan” plot focuses a lot on the character’s death, specifically whether he can and should die, many believe the news that this will be Jackman’s last time playing Wolverine makes the timing perfect for an adaptation.
Despite all the evidence pointing toward an “Old Man Logan” story in the third movie, it’s worth mentioning that no one yet knows much about the film. In fact, the only real information is that it will be Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine and that he’ll be joined by Patrick Stewart’s version of Charles Xavier. Previously, the Professor X character has been shared by Stewart and James McAvoy, as the character often appears in various stages of history.
According to a previous report from ScreenRant, all that Stewart was able to tease about his role is that he’ll be playing a “very different” version of Xavier in the upcoming film. While that doesn’t negate the idea of putting him in a post-apocalyptic United States, it also doesn’t necessarily confirm it either.
It’s possible that fans will have to wait until it gets closer to the film’s scheduled release date, March 3, 2017, before they learn if the minds at 20th Century Fox are going to adapt “Old Man Logan” for the big screen.
