Woman Allegedly Poisons Husband's Drinks With Eyedrops For Months, Arrested
A woman in Ohio is accused of trying to poison her husband by adding eyedrops to his drink.
Christy Fiegelist, 54, of North Lewisburg, was arrested Friday. She admitted that she had been contaminating her husband's drinks with hazardous materials for months.
The Champaign County Sheriff's Office said the husband was first admitted to the hospital on Sept. 20, 2022. Deputies received reports that he might have been poisoned. He was hospitalized again in March, WHIO reported.
The victim later said his wife had bought him vitamin water "with the seal opened and no fluid missing."
The drink was sent to an FBI laboratory, and the results showed that a substance called Tetryzoline was present in it. Even small doses of the substance can be dangerous if ingested.
"They advised that this chemical is hazardous when consumed, even in small quantities, and is often found in over-the-counter eyedrops," court records said.
Fiegelist later admitted to investigators that she had been adding eyedrops to her husband's drinks. She also confessed to secretly poisoning him since January.
"On May 19, 2023, the Champaign County Sheriff's Office charged Christy L. Fiegelist (age: 54) with one count of contaminating a substance for human consumption or use or contamination with a hazardous chemical, biological, or radioactive Substance, a felony of the first degree," the Champaign County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "This charge stems from an investigation into Ms. Fiegelist allegedly placing eyedrops into her husband's bottled water, causing him to be hospitalized."
Fiegelist appeared in court for a preliminary hearing Tuesday. The judge ordered the accused to be held without bond.
The woman is currently behind bars at the Tri-County Jail, according to Dayton 24/7 Now.
"During the hearing, Judge Wiethman concluded that Probable Cause existed to support the charge and bound the case over to the Champaign County Common Pleas Court. This case will be presented to the Grand Jury at a later date," the statement added.
