In a horrific incident, animals were seen digging up and eating a newborn baby who was buried alive by her mother. The incident took place in the back garden of the child's home in the municipality of Camocim, in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Ceara.

According to the Daily Mail, neighbors witnessed the incident after they heard the cries of the baby and went to locate it. The mother's brother allegedly followed a trail of blood to the burial place where a pig and a dog were surrounding the corpse. The 24-year-old mother was later arrested by local police for burying her newborn daughter. It was believed that the woman gave birth to the child in the back garden.

A spokesman for the Centre of Forensics Examinations (PEFOCE), Antonio Veras Nogueira, said the mother had tried to hide her pregnancy. Authorities examined the child's body and found the baby was without vital organs. Authorities also found wounds seemingly inflicted by the animals eating her body.

A forensic examination was conducted on the baby and it determined that the child died from suffocation after being buried alive. The report also confirmed that the baby was "eaten by the animals after."

Nogueira added that "in the examination, the newborn no longer had viscera, nor a heart or lungs," which may have been eaten by the animals.

During questioning, the mother allegedly said she thought the baby had died after she gave birth to the child. She concluded the baby was dead as the child stopped crying and so she buried her. The woman also said she did not want to have the baby and was planning to abort the child as she already had two children. One of the woman's children had already been put up for adoption, local media reported.

The woman also told police that she was scared that there will be issues in her family if she had a third child.

Police sources said the mother had drunk boldo tea — a South American herb seen as unsafe for pregnant women to consume — to try and abort her child. She took the step because abortion was illegal in Brazil except in cases where there was no other way to save the mother's life or if the pregnancy was the result of rape.

The investigation is currently underway into the incident. Authorities are yet to determine the charges that will be placed against the woman.
