A woman in the Indian city of Mumbai died by suicide earlier this week after her boyfriend blocked her number on WhatsApp, police announced Wednesday.

The woman, identified as 20-year-old Pranali Lokare, was found hanging from the ceiling of her boyfriend's home in the neighborhood of Dahisar Monday morning, newspaper The Free Press Journal reported, citing an unnamed police official.

Lokare had insisted that she wanted to sleep at his residence the night before the incident, but her 27-year-old boyfriend, whose name was not disclosed, denied her request and asked her to go home, according to authorities.

While Lokare left the place, she later called her boyfriend and insisted that she wanted to come back, police said.

Lokare's boyfriend allegedly advised her not to go through the plan as he claimed several drug addicts roamed the area at night. He then blocked Lokare's number on WhatsApp, a report by NDTV said.

Despite being told not to return, Lokare went to her boyfriend's home and asked him why he had blocked her on the messenger app.

Lokare ended up staying at the residence, where she hanged herself from the ceiling with her dupatta, a piece of cloth usually worn as a scarf or head covering, according to police.

"When her boyfriend got up in the morning, he was shocked to find her hanging," said the police official, who also noted that no suicide note was found at the scene.

The Borivali unit of the Government Railway Police has registered an accidental death report based on preliminary information, according to authorities.

A similar incident happened in India's Maharashtra state back in early 2020 when an 18-year-old college student, who was blocked from his classmates’ WhatsApp group, died by suicide.

The members of the group had allegedly bullied the teen, identified as Jay, and instigated him to take his own life.

Jay was blocked and unblocked from the group repeatedly, according to his family, and he ended up not going to school for two weeks prior to his death.

"We kept asking him if there was a problem, but he remained silent," Jay's father was quoted as saying.

Police filed an accidental death case in connection to the teen’s death.
