A 38-year-old woman was found injured on the road after she jumped off from the trunk of a moving car while attempting to escape a kidnapping attempt in Madison, North Carolina.
Rockingham County Sheriff's Office responded Thursday morning to reports of an assault and kidnapping near Budget Inn Motel in Madison. The deputies found a severely injured woman, identified as Kristen Robinson, on the road and she was taken to a nearby hospital.
Two people were arrested in connection with the incident and police were on the lookout for a third person, Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said in an official statement.
Police believe the trio entered the victim's room at the motel and assaulted her before putting her in the trunk of their vehicle. Robinson managed to open the vehicle's trunk and jump out of the fast-moving vehicle after they traveled for about 200 yards.
A motel staff who witnessed the incident told police that the three suspects showed up at the motel in a car. They asked the staff to knock on the victim's door pretending to be room service. When the staff refused to do so, they told her that Robinson stole from them and it was their "payback time." The witness said she heard the victim hooting and hollering for help after the suspects entered the room, reported the local television station WFMY.
They then dragged Robinson out of the room and threw her in the trunk. The staff immediately alerted the police. A driver who was on the highway also called 911 when he saw the injured woman on the road.
Police charged one of the suspects, identified as Takiyah Broadnax, 21, with "first-degree kidnapping, breaking and entering and assault inflicting serious injury." She was held at the Rockingham County detention center and was scheduled to appear in court on Dec.1. Broadnax was given a $500,000 secured bond for the kidnapping incident and a separate $7,500 secured bond for violating probation.
The other arrested person was a juvenile. The minor, who was not identified, was charged under the same sections and was placed in a juvenile detention center. The juvenile received a $250,000 secured bond for the kidnap case and a $7,500 secured bond for violating probation.
The investigation was going on.
"The victim did feel like her life was in danger and she had to do what she had to do to survive and she did," Capt. Marcus Marshall of the Rockingham County Sherriff's Office said.
