A woman has been detained in India for allegedly murdering her husband and hiding his body at their home for two days.

The incident came to light Tuesday when neighbors called the police about a foul smell emanating from the couple's house. When cops responded to the residence in Bhubaneshwar, a city in India's eastern state of Odisha, they found the decomposing body of 55-year-old Syama Mundari.

The deceased man's 45-year-old wife, identified by first name Jhingi, lived with the corpse for two days, responding officers said, according to The Times of India.

"We have detained the deceased's wife for interrogation. Minor injury marks were found on the body, though the exact cause of death can be ascertained only after postmortem. The circumstances that led to the death are being examined," Uma Shankar Dash, a senior investigating officer, said as per the outlet.

Neighbors told the cops the couple had a strained relationship. The police suspect the two had a matrimonial dispute, which led to the killing.

Sangram, Mundari's cousin, told the officers he believes Jhingi murdered the man.

"My brother's wife was addicted to alcohol. She might have picked up a quarrel with him and killed him. I saw injury marks on his face and neck," Latest LY quoted Sangram as saying.

Jhingi denied the allegations and claimed her husband died of some illness. However, she could not give any satisfactory explanation for the injuries on him or why she decided to hide his body, according to the police.

The police have detained Jhingi for further questioning and a case has been registered against her.

In July, a Florida woman was arrested for murdering her husband and hiding his body inside her home. The suspect, identified as Angela Riggins Dantzler, from Panama, was arrested in connection with the death of her husband, Lorenzo Dantzler, after police responded to their home for a welfare check. Lorenzo's body was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was hidden beneath layers of dryer sheets to mask the odor.
