A Texas woman has been rescued after her ex-roommate allegedly locked her inside a storage unit. Police say the suspect has a violent past.
Police arrived at the Pollard Self Storage complex in Fort Worth on Wednesday evening after receiving a report about a woman being locked up inside one of the storage units. Fire and emergency medical services staff helped the cops rescue the unidentified woman, ABC-affiliated station WFAA reported.
The woman told them she was locked up inside the storage unit by the suspect, who happened to be her former roommate. She said she was homeless before she began living with the suspect. She eventually moved out after the ex-roommate allegedly assaulted her.
She then started living in the storage unit. When the suspect found her inside the storage unit, the person shut the door and locked it from the outside, leaving the woman with no way to exit, police said.
It was unclear how long the woman was trapped inside the storage unit. Cops have not released any details about the relationship the suspect had with the victim. They have also not revealed the suspect's identity.
Following her rescue, the woman was given medical assistance and was released, NBC DFW reported.
No arrests were made in connection with the incident. Police said the suspect could face charges of assault bodily injury to a family member and unlawful restraint.
In a similar incident, a man in India was arrested last year for holding his wife captive in a room for more than a year. The husband, who sexually assaulted her, kept the woman locked inside a room allegedly to punish her for not giving birth to a baby boy. The woman and her daughters, aged between eight and 14, were rescued after she dropped an SOS note outside her house. Someone in the area accidentally saw the note and informed the police. The woman told cops that her husband had forced her to have multiple abortions.
