Woman Impersonates Nurse, Kidnaps Newborn Baby From Hospital
A mother was reunited with her newborn baby after a woman pretending to be a nurse kidnapped the infant from a hospital. The incident took place in Manhuaçu, Brazil, on May 25 (Monday).
The accused, identified as a 26-year-old woman, visited Cesar Leite Hospital stating that she was pregnant and was experiencing abdominal pains. She received a consultation and was referred to a ward for treatment.
However, the woman walked into the maternity ward and approached a mother with a newborn baby while pretending to be a nurse. She told the mother that the infant needed to be taken for her medication. The mother unsuspectingly handed over the newborn to the woman even though she did not have an identification badge and wasn’t wearing a nurse’s uniform.
The mother started worrying as the woman didn’t return. She asked another nurse if her infant was alright. They then realized that the accused had deceived the mother and left the hospital with the child.
Soon after, police officers arrived at the hospital and started an investigation. They discovered that the woman had gotten into a cab at a nearby bus station and was headed toward the town of Durandé where she lived.
When officers went to the woman's house, they reportedly found the woman and the child in her bedroom. The 26-year-old, however, refused to hand over the baby, claiming that she gave birth to her.
Officers then apprehended the woman and secured the baby from her. The infant was not injured during the incident and was later returned to her mother.
The accused, whose name was not revealed, was placed under arrest. It was not clear if any charges were filed against her.
The case was still under investigation. No further information was available at the time.
In a similar incident that happened last year, a 5-month-old baby girl was returned to her parents a day after she was allegedly kidnapped by her babysitter in the Philippines. The mother noticed that the baby was missing when she woke up and immediately informed the police. While reviewing CCTV footage, they found that the baby was abducted by the babysitter. Authorities later discovered that the babysitter had provided a fake ID to get hired.
