A woman trying to kill herself jumped from the thirteenth floor of a building and fell on an elderly man who was returning from his morning walk, killing both of them. The incident took place in Ahmadabad, a city in the north-western Indian state of Gujarat.

A 30-year-old woman, named Mamta Rathi, fell on top of a 69-year-old retired teacher who happened to be walking below her building. The incident occured around 7 a.m. local time Thursday. Police reported that the man was returning from his morning walk and that a case of accidental death was registered for the time being.

The officers said, “Both bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” and added that both the people involved were residents of the same apartment building. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the woman was suffering from multiple illnesses and had come to visit her brother who was staying on the thirteenth floor.

The officers reported, “Rathi was reportedly fed up with her illness. She was understood to be battling severe insomnia and could not sleep for the past fortnight. Driven to the edge, she committed suicide by jumping from the thirteenth floor of the building.”

Police sources confirmed that the woman had died from the impact of the fall whereas the elderly man succumbed to injuries sustained to his head due to the fall. They also added that the man’s family was in deep shock and the woman’s family was conducting her last rites. “We are looking to get the CCTV footage of the incident,” the police said.
