A woman in India allegedly kidnapped a 2-month-old infant for human sacrifice to revive her dead father. The 25-year-old accused was arrested and the baby boy was rescued without harm, police said.

The terrifying incident happened in India's capital city Delhi on Saturday. The accused, identified as Shweta, executed the crime after befriending the child's mother, pretending to be a social worker specializing in childcare." The woman promised to provide us with free medicines and consultation to both my child and myself," the mother told the cops, as reported by The Hindu.

Shweta, who met the infant's mother at a hospital last week, followed her on the pretext of examining the child. After a second visit, Shweta convinced the mother to hand over the infant for an outing. The mother agreed to send the child along with her 21-year-old niece Ritu to accompany her.

Shweta picked up the child and Ritu in her vehicle for the outing Saturday. After the accused gave Ritu a spiked drink, she fell unconscious and Shweta fled with the child, reports said.

"When she gained consciousness, she informed her family that the child has been kidnapped," an officer told the outlet.

Investigators identified the accused after tracing her vehicle's registration number from CCTV footage. However, she could not be located at her residence. Shweta was later taken into custody based on a tip-off and the child was found safe inside her vehicle.

During interrogation, Shweta told the cops that she kidnapped the infant to perform human sacrifice. Shweta said that her father died last month and she was told that sacrificing an infant of the same gender could revive the dead father, news outlet Hindustan Times reported.

"To execute this superstition, she searched for infant boys in the area, she went to the hospital and introduced herself as an NGO worker," an officer told The Hindu.

The investigators have registered a case of kidnapping against her. According to reports, Shweta was previously arrested in cases relating to robbery and burglary.
