A Florida mother has been arrested for forcing her two-year-old son to smoke a vaping device containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) oil.
Kiarra Clarisse, 22, was charged with felony child neglect by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.
The incident came to light after Clarisse’s former girlfriend, Katelyn Maker, alerted the victim’s father about the vaping. She said Clarisse had skipped the toddler’s medical appointments in the fear that the doctors would detect THC in the child’s system, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by the Smoking Gun.
The boy’s father alerted the child welfare officials and the victim was taken to a hospital. The boy tested positive for THC, which is a psychoactive constituent of marijuana. The hospital authorities then contacted the Brevard County Sheriff’s office.
The child’s father informed the police he had observed his son appeared to be "slow and lethargic" during his visit earlier this month, reported New York Post.
Maker reported to the police she had witnessed the mother forcing the child to smoke the vape pen. Maker said she had received a Snapchat message from Clarisse saying the toddler accidentally took the vape pen containing THC oil and smoked. After that incident, Clarisse would put the vape pen with THC oil to the child’s mouth, letting him smoke so that he would "eat and sleep well," Maker added.
She had reportedly received Snapchat messages from Clarisse showing the child after he used the vape pen. Maker also presented cops with a screenshot picture from a video showing Clarisse smoking the vape pen while lying next to the baby.
According to the court documents obtained by the Smoking Gun, Clarisse worked at a strip club. Maker told the police all Clarisse wanted was to “party, drink, and work in the club.”
Clarisse often left the child in the care of other people in the household who were known to consume excessive amounts of alcohol, and that the boy was not up to date with immunizations, she further stated.
The police verified the medical records and found the child had missed two previous medical appointments.
Clarisse was released from custody Thursday on a $3,000 bond, according to court records. She is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 15.
The woman was convicted of drunk driving and was placed on probation last year. The police had caught the victim’s father and Clarisse in 2017 with two pounds of marijuana in the vehicle. She was arrested on felony narcotics charges and was released on bail.
