Woman Paid For Butt Lift, Wedding, Allegedly By Embezzling Company Money
A former construction company worker in Virginia was accused of embezzling more than $93,000 from her the-then employer to fund her wedding and buttocks lift surgery, the Stafford Sheriff’s office said in a news release Thursday.
According to the release, Vanessa Cline, 32, who used to work as a bookkeeper for the company No Limits Construction, was arrested Wednesday, and charged with five counts of embezzlement, five counts of forgery, and five counts of uttering. The police launched an investigation into the accused on March 13, after learning that she had allegedly made “numerous unauthorized personal purchases using the company credit card."
"The [owner of No Limits Construction] told the detective that he had been contacted by his credit card company informing him that one of his accounts was going to be closed due to lack of payment," Public Information Officer Amanda Vicinanzo said.
The owner then looked into the incident and found out that one of his former employees, who was tasked with maintaining the financial records of the company, had “made numerous unauthorized personal purchases including a wedding dress for $2000 and a wedding planner for $25,000.” Cline’s usage of the company’s credit card did not end there.
She also allegedly paid for a butt lift worth over $7000 at Elite Plastic Surgery in Miami, Florida, as well the motel room where she stayed in while recuperating from the cosmetic procedure, using the embezzled funds. Among the items seized in a recent raid of the accused’s Stafford home was her wedding dress.
Also, some of the other purchases allegedly made by Cline using company funds included “clothing, perfume, household furniture, airline tickets, and an all-terrain vehicle.” Apart from various items and services, Cline also reportedly forged her employer’s signature on five checks totaling nearly $10,000. She deposited the cash in her bank account, according to the police.
Investigators also found that No Limits Construction did not have the best of luck when it came to hiring trustworthy employees. "[Cline] had replaced another former bookkeeper for the company who pleaded guilty to charges last year after embezzling at least $150,000 from the company between January 2016 and January 2018," Vicinanzo added in the release.
Cline was booked in Rappahannock Regional Jail on an $8,000 bond.
In December, the story of two nuns admitting to embezzling nearly $500,000 from a Catholic school in Southern California to pay for their gambling trips to Las Vegas made headlines. Monsignor Michael Meyers of St. James Catholic Church said at the time that the church did not wish to press charges against sisters Mary Margaret Kreuper and Lana Chang and "address the situation internally through the investigation, restitution and sanctions” on them.
"Sister Mary Margaret and Sister Lana have expressed to me and asked that I convey to you, the deep remorse they each feel for their actions and ask for your forgiveness and prayers," Meyers wrote in the letter, CNN reported. "They and their Order pray that you have not lost trust or faith in the educators and administrators of the school."
