A 42-year-old woman was injured after being pushed into an incoming train at a Manhattan, New York, subway station Monday in what is believed to be an unprovoked attack.
The unnamed victim was pushed by another woman at around 8:15 a.m. on the northbound 1, 2 and 3 platform of the Times Square-42 Street Station, ABC 7 reported.
Surveillance footage showed a woman wearing a bandana sitting on a bench before she pushed the victim just as the train approached, according to the outlet. The victim did not fall onto the tracks but hit the side of a number 1 train that had just arrived.
The suspect, who was described as a female in her 30s wearing black sneakers, beige pants, a black sweater and a multi-colored scarf, then fled on foot.
Police later taped off the area where the victim stood and took her to the hospital, a report by CBS2 said.
The victim suffered serious injuries to her face and legs after her face hit the side of the train. She was taken to Mt. Sinai West in stable condition.
The incident is believed to be an unprovoked attack, unnamed sources told CBS2. Authorities are now searching for the woman who pushed the victim.
"People are wicked to be able to push someone on a moving train, and for what? I don’t know, but it’s horrible," subway commuter CJ Stewart was quoted as saying by the outlet.
"Definitely a good reminder to keep your eyes peeled and be on your toes in New York," West Village resident Tyler Sparling said.
The trains reportedly continued to operate with no major interruptions following the incident.
The incident came hours before a man apparently shot himself in the leg inside the same subway station Monday afternoon.
A similar attack happened in late August when a woman was assaulted and was pushed down onto the train tracks of a Brooklyn subway station by a stranger.
Police arrested 24-year-old John Merritt after he followed and attacked the victim on the northbound 3 and 4 platform at Utica Avenue-Eastern Parkway Station on Aug. 25.
A video of the incident shot by a bystander showed Merritt assaulting the victim, who countered by swinging a yellow "Wet Floor" sign at Merritt in response to his aggression. Merritt then shoved the victim toward the station's train tracks - forcing her to fall backward onto the roadbed.
The next train was several minutes away when she fell down onto the tracks.
The victim was able to get back up onto the platform with the help of a fellow commuter and went after Merritt.
Merritt attempted to flee on a train, but police were already on the scene and collared him. He was arrested and charged with assault, menacing and harassment.
The woman was injured from the encounter and was treated by emergency medical personnel on the scene.
