A woman in An Giang Province, Vietnam, was arrested Saturday after she tried to sell her two-year-old niece in exchange for an iPhone.

According to local reports, the woman, identified as Hanh, used to look after the girl once in a while. On Oct. 31, when Hanh had taken the baby out to play, she received a video call from her new Facebook friend, Vinh. During the call, Vinh repeatedly told Hanh the baby was beautiful. Hanh lied to her friend that the baby’s mother was addicted to gambling and her father also abandoned her. Hanh also told Vinh the parents were not willing to look after the baby and were planning to send her to a home run by Buddhist priests.

Vinh showed interest in adopting the girl and promised that she would give Hanh an iPhone 11 and some money in exchange. Hanh immediately agreed to this. The following morning, Hanh picked the toddler from her home and told her grandmother that she was taking the baby out to play. She instead took the baby to Vinh’s place. Vinh gave the woman $65 and also the phone she had promised. Hanh then went to a police station and filed a missing complaint.

During investigation, police felt something was wrong and doubted the woman’s testimony. Police detained the woman and during interrogation, she confessed to selling the girl to get an iPhone 11. Police immediately went to Vinh’s house and “rescued” the toddler and brought her back to her family. They detained Vinh for questioning. Following this, police arrested Hanh and decided to prosecute her.
