A woman was brought to safety after she got trapped in a frozen pond while trying to save her son who fell into it Thursday in north suburban Deer Park, Switzerland. The boy was attempting to rescue their pet dog.

The Lake Zurich Fire Department responded to the 21000 block of North Inglenook Court and rescued the woman from the retention pond, the fire officials said in a press release.

The dog, named Abby, got stuck in the ice prompting her 12-year-old sons to rush to its rescue. However, both of them got stuck there. One boy and the dog managed to escape but the other got trapped there and the woman jumped to his rescue. She was able to grab him and pull him out from the ice but ended up getting trapped herself. The father of the children tried to save the mother but in vain. The rescue workers found her 50 feet offshore stuck in ice, according to the press release. A rescue swimmer from the fire department swam up to the mother and saved her.

"You're just sitting there, thinking, oh my gosh, this is it. This might be the end. What's going to happen? What if I can't save my son?" Lucia Feczko, the woman, said after being rescued.

Paramedics arrived at the spot and checked the boys and the woman. Two of them were taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in North Barrington.

The Lake Zurich Fire Department was assisted by the Long Grove Fire Department in the rescue process. The former has asked people to remain conscious of potentially thin ice resulting from milder winter weather conditions.
